Who are the Travelling Broads?
Linda Lou
I am a dentist by day and I race cars for sport. Most pertinent to this website, I am an avid travel enthusiast. I want to inspire mature women to take the leap and visit far-flung destinations. I hope sharing my journeys will encourage you to leave the comfort of your home and fall for the joy of great travel. In my world, there is lots of banter, craziness, and mishaps which all transform into great stories. I wiggled my way under barriers to secure the front row of Lady Gaga's opening night in Vegas. I found coveralls that allowed me to manifest the camera side of Pasadena's Rose Parade in California. I snuck into the Florence Opera House to hear Pavarotti perform Il Trovatore. My mantra: Sometimes audacity is the only ticket! (Perhaps not what Winston Churchill had in mind with his famous quote.)
When I was 11 years old I travelled with my mother to visit the Highlands of Scotland, where her uncle had married and remained after the war. Almost 50 years later, I still remember the quilt-like green fields and the unmistakable smell of heather. Since then, trips have included staying at the Egyptian King's hunting lodge in Cairo, followed the next night by an unfortunate sleep on a flea-ridden carpet, having missed my flight, trying to purchase an Egyptian cotton housecoat... Still not regretting a dime I have spent on travel.
Generally, my adventures seem to get better and more satisfying, leading me to conclude that eventually experience plays a big factor. My last major excursion was travelling around the world in 30 days, instead of the renowned 80 days - giving Jules Verne a modern run for his money.
Mature women over 50, are one of the largest demographics of travellers today, often leading the way with solo travel. It is my hope that through my website and my social media channels that I will inspire you to take up the torch. I maintain that every trip should have at least one day that will stay with you till you die. How do you make that happen? I can do it now by instinct, as I have travelled so much. I can feel when the universe is telling me there is something better around the corner. Just trusting my gut and taking the plunge and very often taking the path less travelled, leads me to unimaginable discoveries and incredible self-fulfillment.
Stay tuned to this site to hear more about my travels across the globe and all the travel tips and stories that go along with it.
Some of my fabulous travelling companions…
Uriel
Mexico, New York City, Indonesia
Unsatisfied with holding management positions in the corporate world, Uriel eventually studied and embraced yoga like the ancient masters. She became the founder of Shanti Yoga which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. This includes managing three studios in the Greater Halifax area, as well as teaching transformational yoga all over the world. Her mission in life is create better awareness and promote connectedness through the study of yoga.
Brenda
Wales & St. Pierre
Brenda Lee is artistic in nature, having owned a flower shop The Orchid for 28 years in Corner Brook, where she honed her creativity with floral arrangements and interior decoration. She inherited her love of experiencing new places and meeting new people from her father. A hardworking man, Brenda’s father taught her the value of work, and her reward for working hard was gifting herself with travel. Over the past few years, Brenda’s love of travelling has blossomed into a passion. She loves indulging while on vacation and takes the time to be pampered whenever possible. Next up? Spain, she thinks. Actually anywhere warm, Brenda prefers the sunny south to Canadian winters.
Margie
California, South Carolina & Argentina
With 41 distinguished years in the Canadian Navel Reserve, Margie was the perfect navigator for a partnership in automobile racing with Linda. Part of an all female race team in Targa Newfoundland, team member in 24 Hours of Lemon's in the U.S. and finally participant in the Roses des Andes Rally in Northern Argentina, this girl could give orders! Not a stretch when you learn Margie had finished her career in the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander. She has been twice around the world and soloed twice across North America on her prized Harley Davidson. Margie hates camping.
Theresa
Greece, Turkey, Nevada, South Africa, Tanzania, Russia, Mongolia & China
Theresa is down with all things sports. This is not a shock given her career teaching Physical Education to grades 8 -12 in the Vancouver District since 1998. Theresa and I have enjoyed numerous excursions including two World Cups, 2010/South Africa & 2018/Russia. The trip to Africa included two safaris: South Africa & Tanzania. The trip to Siberia saw them on the Trans Siberian Railway to discover Baikal, the largest freshwater lake in the World. There is no where these two won't go.
